Jesus Christ says, “Follow Me.” But what does it actually mean to answer that call?
When Christ called the first apostles, they left behind their work, security, families, and familiar way of life and followed Him—even before they fully understood where He was leading them.
Hidden within their response is a powerful spiritual law for every Christian:
We cannot grow if we are unwilling to let go.
If we want a deeper relationship with God, we cannot simply add Jesus on top of a life already filled with worldly attachments, distractions, pleasures, habits, and priorities. Something has to change.
Think of the soul as a vessel. If the vessel is already full, nothing more can enter. In the same way, if our hearts are filled with the world, where is the room for God?
To be filled with the Holy Spirit, we must gradually empty ourselves of the things that keep us attached to the world.
That means Christianity cannot remain merely good intentions.
We need to make time for prayer.
We need a rule of life.
We need to remove habits that pull us away from God.
We need to act when God calls.
And sometimes, following Christ will make absolutely no sense to the people around us.
The apostles experienced exactly this.
They said yes before they had all the answers.
They walked in faith.
They sacrificed.
They endured trials.
And eventually, they understood why Christ had called them.
This meditation also confronts us with one of Christ’s most sobering warnings: merely calling Him “Lord” is not enough. We are called to do the will of the Father.
So examine your spiritual life:
Are you closer to God than you were last year?
Have you removed anything that was keeping you from Him?
Have your prayer, discipline, sacrifice, and love for Christ actually grown?
Or have you become spiritually stagnant?
Christ is still calling:
“Come, follow Me.”
The question is no longer what Peter, Andrew, James, and John answered.
The question is:
What will your answer be?
