Byzantine Saints: Hieromartyr Dionysius, Bishop of Alexandria (5 October)
Published October 5
St. Dionysius the Great, also known as Dianus, Bishop of Alexandria, is commemorated on October 5th in the Orthodox Church. Born to wealthy pagan parents, he converted to Christianity later in life and became a devoted disciple of Origen.
In 247 AD, Dionysius became Bishop of Alexandria, leading the faithful through times of persecution under Emperor Decius (249–251) and Valerian (253–259). Exiled, persecuted, and tested by famine, plague, and civil unrest, St. Dionysius remained steadfast in the Orthodox faith.
He urged Christians to care for the sick and bury the dead, showing great love and pastoral care. His writings, though mostly preserved in fragments by Eusebius, address theological and practical issues, such as temptations, nature, and God’s promises.
Eusebius of Caesarea referred to him as “Dionysius the Great”, a testimony to his spiritual wisdom and leadership. Two of his letters remain complete today—one to Novatian and another to Domitius.
🙏 Through his sermons, writings, and works of charity, St. Dionysius illuminated the Church with the light of Christ. He reposed in 265 AD during the Council of Antioch.
May his life inspire us in faith, perseverance, and charity.
