Would you recognize a saint at the grocery store, at work, or on the street? This All Saints sermon explores the often-hidden character of holiness and the virtues that should shape our own lives.
The sermon begins with two Catholic apologetics reflections: the 144,000 and the innumerable multitude in Revelation, and Christβs teaching in Matthew 22 that God is the God of the living. These passages introduce a discussion of Scripture in context and the Catholic understanding of the saints alive in Christ.
The preacher then asks why holy people are so often misunderstoodβeven by those within the Church. Examples include St. Teresa of Avila, St. Alphonsus Liguori, and the pilgrim saint, St. Benedict Joseph Labre.
Extraordinary gifts can attract our attention, but the sermon directs us toward faith, hope, and especially charity. When reading saintsβ lives, looking for these virtues helps us discover lessons we can practice in our own circumstances.
Whatever your state in life, health, or past, God calls you to respond to His grace today. The goal is to recognize holiness, imitate the saints, and persevere toward heaven.
