On October 4th, the Church commemorates Saint Peter of Capitus, a faithful witness of Christ who endured a brutal martyrdom for his unwavering confession of the Orthodox faith.

Born and raised in the ancient city of Capitus (in modern-day eastern Jordan on the road to Damascus), St. Peter was known for his wisdom and prudence. After the death of his wife, he embraced monasticism, later becoming a priest through the blessing of the Bishop of Bura in ancient Syria.

As a Christian teacher, St. Peter boldly proclaimed Christ before the Saracen ethnarch. For this, he endured cruel tortures:

His hands and feet were severed

His eyes were gouged out

He was crucified

Finally, he was beheaded

After his death, his body was burned and cast into a river. While some traditions place his martyrdom in the 3rd–4th century, it is more probable that it occurred in the 8th century.

May the prayers and example of the Holy Hieromartyr Peter of Capitus strengthen us in our own walk with Christ.
