The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 4 reveals one of the most powerful moments in the life of Christ — His temptation in the desert by Satan after 40 days of fasting.

After being led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Jesus is tempted three times by the devil. Each time, Christ defeats Satan not with worldly power, but with the Word of God.

This passage teaches us the spiritual weapons needed to overcome temptation: prayer, fasting, humility, and Scripture.

Following this victory, Jesus begins His public ministry, proclaiming:

“Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

He calls His first disciples — Peter, Andrew, James, and John — transforming simple fishermen into fishers of men.

Christ’s light begins to shine in Galilee, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah that those who walked in darkness would see a great light.

This Gospel passage reminds us that:

Temptation is real

Satan is defeated through obedience to God

Christ calls ordinary men to extraordinary missions

The Kingdom of Heaven begins with repentance
