Saints Hilary, Bishop and Tatian, Deacon (16 March): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On March 16, the Church remembers the heroic martyrdom of St Hilary, Bishop of Aquileia, and St Tatian, his faithful deacon. Their story, recorded in Father Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints, shows the courage of Christians who refused to sacrifice to pagan idols under the Roman Empire.
From childhood, St Hilary was raised in the Christian faith, dedicating himself to the study of Sacred Scripture and eventually becoming bishop. With wisdom and prudence he shepherded his flock and ordained his disciple Tatian as deacon to assist in the ministry.
When the Roman authorities ordered Christians to worship idols, Hilary boldly proclaimed his loyalty to Jesus Christ, refusing to sacrifice to false gods. The pagan prefect subjected him to brutal tortures, yet he continued singing hymns to God even while suffering.
Soon after, Tatian was arrested and tortured as well, remaining faithful to Christ and joining his bishop in prison. During these persecutions, a terrible storm struck Aquileia and the temple of Hercules collapsed. Enraged pagans demanded the execution of the Christians.
Hilary, Tatian, and their companions Felix, Largus, and Dionysius were beheaded for the name of Christ, winning the crown of martyrdom on March 16.
Their story reminds us that true faith remains steadfast even in persecution, and that the martyrs stand as powerful witnesses to the truth of Christ.
