Blessed Franz Jägerstätter was a humble Austrian farmer, husband, and father who refused to fight for Hitler’s army during World War II.
Despite enormous pressure from fellow Catholics, clergy, and civil authorities, he followed his conscience and refused to participate in what he believed to be an unjust war.
For this act of moral courage, he was executed by the Nazi regime in 1943.
His witness forces us to confront a difficult question:
Is it always moral for Catholics to fight in war?
In this talk we examine:
• The heroic witness of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter
• The Catholic Just War doctrine from the Catechism
• Our Lady of Fatima's warning about wars
• The virtue of prudence in moral decisions
• Whether Catholics should join the modern military
• The importance of conscience and fidelity to God
The Church teaches that war is not automatically just.
Catholics must examine whether a war meets strict moral conditions before participating.
Blessed Jägerstätter chose to obey God rather than men.
His example challenges Catholics today to remain faithful even when society demands compromise.
“If I must write with my hands in chains, I find that much better than if my will were in chains.”
