Today we honor St. Phoebe the Deaconess, commemorated on September 3rd. She is mentioned by the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Romans:

"I commend to you Phoebe our sister, the Deaconess of the Church at Cenchrea, that you may receive her in the Lord as befits the saints, and may assist her in whatever business she has need of you, for she has been a helper of many and of myself as well." (Romans 16:1–2)

Phoebe may have been the one who carried Paul’s letter to the Romans, continuing her ministry in Rome. The Church Fathers such as Origen and St. John Chrysostom testify to her important role, showing that women served in special ministries in the early Church — especially to women preparing for baptism and instruction.

Through St. Phoebe’s faithful service, we see an example of dedication, humility, and support in the life of the Church.
