Saint Phoebe of Cenchreae was a trusted helper of the Apostle Paul and an important servant of the early Church. Saint Paul personally commended her to the Christians in Rome, asking them to receive and assist her as one who had helped many—including the Apostle himself.

In Romans 16:1–2, Saint Paul writes:

“I commend to you Phoebe our sister, the deaconess of the church of Cenchreae, that you may receive her in the Lord, as befits the saints, and may assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for she has been a helper of many and of myself as well.”

Cenchreae was the eastern port of Corinth and the home of an early Christian community. Phoebe may have been entrusted with carrying Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Romans to the Church in Rome. If so, she delivered one of the most consequential writings in the history of Christianity.

Saint Paul describes Phoebe with the Greek word “diakonos.” Origen understood this passage as evidence that women were appointed to a ministry within the Church. In his Commentary on Romans, he treated Phoebe’s service as worthy of apostolic praise.

Saint John Chrysostom likewise recognized the honor Saint Paul gave her, writing: “Moreover, he has added to her rank by mentioning her as being a deaconess.”

The precise use of “diakonos” in this passage has been interpreted in two principal ways. It can mean a servant or minister in a general sense, as it does in several other New Testament passages. It may also refer to a recognized ministry exercised by women in the early Church.

Such women assisted with the instruction and preparation of female catechumens for Baptism and performed ministries that required service specifically to women. This historical ministry was distinct from the ordained priesthood.

Whatever the precise nature of her office, Scripture clearly presents Phoebe as a faithful Christian woman whom Saint Paul trusted, honored, and commended to the universal Church.

Her example reminds us that service offered quietly and faithfully can influence generations. Saint Phoebe may have carried a letter from Corinth to Rome—but that letter continues to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world.

Saint Phoebe the Deaconess, pray that we may faithfully serve Christ, assist His Church, and use our gifts for the salvation of others.
