What does it truly mean to “act like men” and do everything in love? In this Catholic homily, Father Nathan explores Saint Paul’s challenging words and explains why authentic Christian masculinity is defined by sacrificial love, spiritual strength, self-control, reconciliation, and complete devotion to Jesus Christ.
The modern world often associates manliness with domination, aggression, intimidation, and imposing one’s will upon others. Christ reveals something radically different. True masculine strength is the willingness to lay down one’s life, master one’s passions, remain firm in truth, and overcome evil with good.
Drawing from Sacred Scripture and the wisdom of Saint Porphyrios, this sermon explains why Christians must see sinners not as enemies to attack, but as wounded brothers and sisters who have been overcome by the enemy. Love does not join the lion in attacking the wounded. Love seeks to rescue, restore, and reconcile.
This homily also examines:
Saint Paul’s command to “act like men”
Why sacrificial love defines Christian masculinity
The husband’s duty to love as Christ loved the Church
Responding to insults without surrendering to anger
Overcoming evil with good
Correcting sinners without attacking them
Loving wounded brothers and sisters
Seeking reconciliation without feeding the ego
Loving one’s neighbor as evidence of loving God
Why Christian love extends to all of God’s creation
The Christian response to violence, war, suffering, and death
Becoming a visible reflection of the God who is love
“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
May this sermon encourage Catholic men—and every Christian—to stand firm in the faith, surrender pride and anger, love without exception, and become faithful images of Jesus Christ.
