What is the greatest commandment? When a Doctor of the Law challenges Jesus, Our Lord gives an answer at the very heart of the Christian life: love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.
But this Gospel is more than a theological debate. It presents a challenge to every Catholic: Is our spiritual life coherent?
We can spend hours in church, pray the Rosary every day, know Catholic doctrine, and practice our devotionsβbut if we treat our fellow Christians without charity, something is seriously wrong. As this homily puts it, the inflow of the Holy Spirit must be accompanied by the outflow of charity.
That charity can mean serving the parish, helping our community, giving to the poor, praying for others, and carrying our Catholic Faith into our homes, workplaces, schools, and society.
The Church is not merely a comfortable fortress where we withdraw for an hour on Sunday. Christians are called to go into the world and build the Kingdom of God.
Drawing upon St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, this sermon also emphasizes Catholic unity: one God, one Spirit, one Gospel, one love, one heart, one altar, one Eucharist. We are not isolated groupsβwe belong to the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.
Even when Catholics find themselves a minority within an increasingly secular culture, the answer is not despair. The early Christians also lived amid paganism and immorality, yet the Church spread throughout the ancient world.
The mission remains the same:
Love God before all thingsβand show the world that you love Him by loving your neighbor.
That is what it means to live as a Christian.
π Pray for the renewal of the Catholic Faith, especially in Ireland and throughout the world.
