On August 29, the Church commemorates the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, the holy Prophet and Forerunner of Christ. Imprisoned by Herod Antipas for condemning his unlawful marriage, John was martyred after Herodias’ daughter, Salome, demanded his head on a platter. This tragic event reminds us of John’s courage in speaking truth and the cost of discipleship.

The feast is observed as a strict fast day in the Orthodox Christian tradition. Many faithful refrain from eating food on flat plates, using knives, or consuming round foods, as a sign of mourning for the violent death of the saint.
