On August 31st, the Church commemorates St. Cuthberga (also called St. Cuberg), Queen, Virgin, and Abbess. She was the sister of King Ine of Wessex and was married to King Aldfrith of Northumbria. With her husband’s consent, she remained always a virgin, dedicating her life to Christ.

She first entered the monastery of Barking, and later founded the great abbey of Wimborne in Dorsetshire, where she lived a life of deep prayer, fasting, and humility. Known for her meekness toward others and austerity toward herself, she continually exhorted her sisters to remain faithful as the spouses of Christ, keeping their hearts detached from worldly things and longing for heaven.

After enduring a long illness and receiving the Holy Eucharist as viaticum, she entered into eternal life in the early 8th century. Her memory is honored in the Sarum Breviary on this day.
