In today’s Gospel, we hear the words of the Good Samaritan: “Take care of him” (Luke 10:35). These words speak directly to our souls—often wounded and left half dead by sin. Yet instead of caring for our souls, many continue to abuse God’s mercy, adding sin upon sin, presuming forgiveness without repentance.

This powerful sermon reminds us of the danger of presumption:

St. Augustine warns us that the devil deceives souls by despair after sin and by presumption before sin.

St. John Chrysostom cautions us not to listen to the “dog” that promises mercy as an excuse for sin.

Scripture reveals that God is merciful, but He is also just—and His justice will not be mocked.
