Keep your eyes on Jesus—even when the storm is raging.
In the Gospel account of Peter walking on water, Christ reveals a powerful lesson about faith, fear, anxiety, suffering, and trusting God in difficult times. Peter is able to walk toward Jesus while his eyes remain fixed on the Lord. But when he begins focusing on the wind and the waves, fear takes over—and he begins to sink.
How often does the same thing happen to us?
When trials come, we can feel as though God has abandoned us. Fear clouds our spiritual vision. Anxiety consumes our attention. We want the Lord to solve our problems immediately. Yet, as St. John Chrysostom teaches, God can use these very trials to strengthen our faith and teach us courage.
Christ has not abandoned us in the storm.
He comes to us and says: “Take courage.”
And when we begin to sink, we can make Peter’s prayer our own:
“Lord, save me.”
This homily reflects on what Peter walking on water teaches us about choosing faith over fear, remaining faithful to Jesus during suffering, trusting in the goodness of God, developing a deeper life of prayer, and encountering Christ through the Divine Liturgy and Holy Eucharist.
We also look to the courageous witness of a holy virgin martyr of Rome, whose steadfast faith demonstrates what it means to keep our eyes fixed on Christ even in the midst of tremendous trials.
Whatever storm you are facing, Jesus Christ is present. The winds of fear, worry, anxiety, and discouragement do not have to determine where you look. With God's grace, we can step out in faith, draw closer to Christ in love, and take His hand whenever we begin to sink.
