St. Wulmar, Abbot of Samer (20 July): Butler's Lives of the Saints

St. Wulmar (also known as St. Omar), Abbot of Samer, gave up wealth, nobility, and worldly honor to seek God alone. Born into a noble family in Picardy, he entered the Abbey of Hautmont as a humble lay brother, faithfully tending cattle and cutting wood before obedience led him to the priesthood.
Seeking an even deeper union with God, St. Wulmar embraced the life of a hermit near Mount Cassel before founding the Abbey of Samer in 688. His life became a testimony to prayer, silence, recollection, and charity. Through withdrawal from worldly distractions, he cultivated a profound love of God that inspired countless souls.
In this reading from Fr. Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints for July 20, discover the remarkable story of one of the Church's lesser-known saints whose life reminds us that true peace is found not in worldly success, but in contemplation of God.
His relics were later translated to Ghent after the threat of Norman invasions before being tragically destroyed during the Calvinist iconoclasm of the sixteenth century. Yet his holy example continues to inspire Christians seeking a deeper spiritual life.
