Byzantine Saints: Virgin Martyr Pelagia of Antioch (8 October)

Published October 8

The Holy Virgin Martyr Pelagia of Antioch was a young Christian maiden from a noble family in Antioch, Syria, during the reign of Emperor Numerian (282–284 AD). When the ruler of Antioch learned of her Christian faith, he sent soldiers to violate her. Surrounded and facing the threat of assault, the 15-year-old saint lifted her hands to Heaven and prayed that her purity might be preserved. With courage and faith, she leapt from her window, giving her soul to God and choosing martyrdom rather than defilement.

St. John Chrysostom later praised her in a famous encomium, emphasizing that Pelagia’s act was not suicide, but a desperate attempt to escape violation and preserve her virginity. Her memory was honored in churches both in Antioch and Constantinople, and the Church commemorates her feast day on October 8th.

🌹 May her witness inspire us to stand firm in faith, courage, and purity even in the face of trials.
