St. Tarasius, Archbishop of Constantinople, is commemorated on February 25th. Born into an illustrious family and raised in Constantinople, he rose quickly in imperial service under Emperor Constantine VI and Empress Irene. Though a layman, he was chosen to become Patriarch during one of the most turbulent crises in Church history — the Iconoclast controversy.

In 787, St. Tarasius presided over the 7th Ecumenical Council at Nicaea, where the veneration of holy icons was solemnly affirmed and the iconoclast heresy was condemned. Through courage, humility, and deep asceticism, he restored unity to the Church and defended sacred tradition.

St. Tarasius lived a life of holiness and charity — feeding the poor, serving widows and orphans, and personally ministering to the needy at Pascha. He even rebuked the emperor when he attempted to unlawfully dissolve his marriage. Fearless before earthly power and steadfast before demonic accusations at his death, St. Tarasius remains a model of episcopal courage and fidelity.
