Saint Walburga (25 February): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On February 25, Holy Mother Church honors St. Walburga, abbess, missionary, and sister of saints.
Daughter of the holy King St. Richard of Wessex and sister to St. Willibald and St. Winibald, Walburga was born in the Kingdom of the West Saxons in England. Educated at the monastery of Wimborne in Dorsetshire, she lived 27 years in religious formation before being sent to Germany under St. Leoba at the request of her cousin, St. Boniface.
Eventually appointed abbess at Heidenheim—founded by her two saintly brothers—St. Walburga governed not only the nuns but, after her brother’s death in 760, exercised spiritual oversight even over the monks’ abbey. Her life radiated evangelical charity, meekness, and profound holiness.
She entered eternal rest on February 25, 779, after 25 years at Heidenheim. Her relics were later translated to Eichstätt, where devotion to her spread across Germany, Flanders, France, and the Low Countries. She became widely known for miraculous oil said to flow from her relics, a sign of heavenly favor.
Her life was recorded by multiple medieval authors, including Wolfhard of Eichstätt (c. 890), and her feast remains celebrated across the Catholic world.
