What would change if you could attend Holy Mass only once a year? Would you prepare differently, pay closer attention, and receive Our Lord with greater reverence?
Beginning with the life of St. Placidus and his companions, this sermon explains why the Mass and Holy Communion stand at the center of the Catholic faith. As a young Benedictine, Placidus was miraculously rescued from drowning when St. Maurus—acting under St. Benedict’s blessing—walked across the water without realizing it. Placidus later founded a monastery in Sicily and received the crown of martyrdom with his companions.
The same faith that formed these saints is nourished through the Holy Eucharist. Every other sacrament prepares us for, restores us to, or supports our union with Christ in Holy Communion. Yet because Mass is readily available, Catholics can begin treating the extraordinary as ordinary.
We will inevitably experience distractions and failures. God does not demand flawless spiritual performance; He asks for sincere, persevering effort. We must continually return, prepare more carefully, and approach every Mass as though it were our first, our last, and our only Mass.
St. Placidus and Companions, St. Benedict, St. Maurus, and our holy guardian angels, pray for us!
