Byzantine Saints: Saint Dometian, Bishop of Melitene (10 January)

Saint Domian, Bishop of Melitene, is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on January 10. Living in the 6th century, during the reign of Emperor Justin II, Saint Domian is remembered as a wise hierarch, devoted pastor, and miracle-working saint.
Originally married, Saint Domian was widowed at a young age. Following this loss, he embraced the monastic life, dedicating himself fully to prayer, asceticism, and holiness. His strict and virtuous life quickly became known, and at just 30 years old, he was chosen as Bishop of Melitene in Armenia.
As bishop, Saint Domian was zealous in matters of faith, strong in both word and deed, and deeply beloved by the people. His reputation extended beyond the Church, and he was entrusted with important government missions to Persia, helping to prevent conflict between Persia and the Byzantine Greeks.
Despite receiving many rich gifts and honors, Saint Domian lived simply, distributing his wealth to the poor, both during his life and through charitable acts arranged after his death. He reposed in the Lord in 601 AD, and was later glorified by God through miracles, confirming his holiness.
