In today’s video I am tackling the fascinating topic of American history and the Protestant ethos of this country. Does our history shape who we are and how we view the world? I think it does. When English puritans came to this country they wanted freedom of religion, but only for themselves. The concept of freedom of religion as we know it today was formed over a span of a hundred years. When the colonists couldn’t agree on religion and tolerance for disagreements they fractured into a world of divide and chaos. Seeing the need for reform, Thomas Jefferson and other thinkers like him helped shape the freedom of religion that we now enjoy. But has it helped our country be more united or more fractured? Take a step back and think about the possibility that everything you’ve been taught to believe since the founding of this country is in your DNA and shapes how you think. Consider that you might need to change your mind and reconnect with history, not just the history of America and but the history of the Church. In a world of cultural chaos and disagreement, maybe, just maybe, history can bring us back to reality.
