Discover the courageous life of Saint Melitine of Marcianopolis, a Christian martyr and wonderworker commemorated on September 16.
Saint Melitine lived in Marcianopolis in Thrace during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius. Her zealous preaching brought many pagans to faith in Jesus Christ, attracting the attention of Antiochus, the local ruler and a fierce persecutor of Christians.
Melitine was arrested for refusing to conceal her faith. God blessed her with the gift of working miracles, and through the power of her prayers, the idols of Apollo and Heracles were shattered.
When Antiochus could not persuade her to worship the pagan gods, he entrusted her to his wife and several women who attempted to win her over through kindness and flattery. Their efforts failed completely. Instead of abandoning Christ, Melitine converted the ruler’s wife to Christianity.
The two women secretly worked together and brought many others to the Faith. When Antiochus discovered what had happened, he became furious and ordered both women to be beheaded.
Saint Melitine walked courageously to her death and entered everlasting glory.
Her sacred body initially remained unburied. A Christian named Acacius, traveling home to Macedonia, obtained permission to carry away her relics. He placed them in a chest and departed by sea, but became ill and died during the journey. The ship stopped at a promontory on the island of Lemnos, where Saint Melitine’s relics were buried. Acacius, who had shown such love for the martyr, was buried near her tomb.
Saint Melitine’s life reminds us that authentic Christian witness can convert even those sent to oppose us—and that no earthly authority can conquer a soul firmly united to Jesus Christ.
Saint Melitine of Marcianopolis, pray for us.
