Are Christians required to forgive everyone unconditionally?
This sermon challenges a commonly repeated answer and asks us to distinguish carefully between love, forgiveness, repentance, and reconciliation. The speaker argues that Christians must always love their enemies, pray for them, desire their salvation, and surrender vengeance to God—but that forgiveness, properly understood, involves repentance and the removal of a real debt.
Central to the argument is Christ’s teaching in Luke 17: “If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.” The sermon emphasizes that repentance appears within Christ’s command to forgive.
Forgiveness is then described as more than an internal feeling. It means remitting the debt and beginning genuine reconciliation—a restored relationship rather than simply pretending nothing happened.
The sermon also addresses false repentance, restitution, healthy judgment, praying for enemies, and the danger of confusing forgiveness with ignoring serious wrongdoing.
Importantly, the speaker acknowledges that many theologians and priests would disagree with his position and explicitly invites arguments from Scripture, the Fathers, liturgical texts, and sound theology.
Listen carefully, test the argument, and join the discussion.
