“Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

In Luke 10, Christ answers one of the most important questions any man can ask: love God with your whole heart, soul, strength, and mind—and love your neighbor as yourself.

But then comes the question: “Who is my neighbor?”

Our Lord responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan, teaching that anyone suffering or in difficulty must become the object of our compassion and assistance.

This sermon explores the interpretation of the Fathers of the Church. The priest and Levite represent the Law and the Prophets: knowledge of good and evil is important, but knowledge must be accompanied by action. As St. Augustine teaches, no one should be excluded from the works of mercy—even those who hate us.

The Fathers also saw a deeper spiritual meaning. The wounded traveler represents those injured by sin, while the inn represents the Church, where weary souls receive healing through prayer, devotion, and the sacraments.

Outside is the struggle between good and evil. Within the Church, Christ offers spiritual nourishment, strength, healing, and peace.

Knowing the faith is not enough. We must live it.
