Why should Christians continually ask the Mother of God for her protection and intercession?
In this personal Byzantine Catholic homily for the Feast of the Protection of the Theotokos, a priest reflects on the icons in his parish office and explains why this particular feast of the Mother of God has held such an important place in his life.
The answer goes back to his Baba.
She lived nearly 100 years and was a deeply devout woman who regularly sang hymns and prayers to the Mother of God. She was not a scholar of St. Gregory Palamas, the Cappadocian Fathers, or St. John of Damascus. Yet through the prayers she knew by heart, she possessed something profound: a lived encounter with God and a deep love for the Theotokos.
Those prayers became, as the homily describes it, her “prima theologia”—her first theology.
Before theology was something studied in a classroom, it was something prayed, sung, remembered, and lived.
Her repeated prayers to the Mother of God formed within her a confidence in Mary's maternal protection—and that devotion was handed down to another generation.
The Feast of the Protection of the Theotokos does not simply commemorate something that happened centuries ago. It reminds Christians to seek the Mother of God's intercession here and now, every day.
As the homily reminds us: We should never tire of asking Our Lady for her protection and her intercession.
Throughout the history of the Church, Christians have turned to the Mother of God in times of suffering, danger, uncertainty, and need. The same invitation remains before us today.
Pray to her.
Sing the ancient hymns.
Ask for her intercession.
Teach those prayers to your children and grandchildren.
And never underestimate how a simple prayer, faithfully repeated over a lifetime, can form a soul.
Most Holy Theotokos, save us!
