Have you ever stood beneath a massive skyscraper, looked straight up, and felt impossibly small? Humanity once faced an infinitely greater divide: the seemingly unbridgeable distance between fallen man and the holiness of God.

Then Jacob dreamed of a mysterious ladder stretching from earth to Heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending upon it.

Why does the Byzantine Catholic Church proclaim this passage from Genesis during Marian feasts?

Because the Fathers of the Church saw in Jacob’s Ladder a prophetic image of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Through Mary's fiat—her courageous “yes” to God—the Son of God descended from Heaven and assumed our human nature. The Mother of God became, in the language of the Eastern tradition, the living ladder and golden bridge between Heaven and Earth.

This mystery takes on particular beauty during the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos (Pokrov). The sermon recalls the traditional account of the Mother of God appearing during prayer in Constantinople, where St. Andrew the Fool-for-Christ beheld her praying and extending her protecting veil over the faithful.

Her mantle reminds us that we are not abandoned when life becomes overwhelming.

We worry about our children.
We worry about our health.
We worry about the future.

We convince ourselves that every problem depends upon our own strength.

But the Church points us upward.

The Mother of God teaches us that we do not climb to Heaven through anxiety, control, or our own strength. We quiet our hearts, choose the “better part” like Mary of Bethany, and entrust ourselves to the grace of God.

No matter how disconnected, overwhelmed, or distant we may feel, the line between Heaven and Earth remains open. Through the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, we are never out of reach.
