Blessed Giles of Laurenzana, whose feast is celebrated on January 10, was a humble Franciscan lay brother renowned for his miracles, ecstatic prayer, prophecy, and deep communion with God’s creation.

Born around 1443 in Laurenzana, in the ancient Kingdom of Naples, Giles was raised by pious Christian parents of the working class. From a young age, he felt drawn to a life of prayer and solitude—especially under the influence of the Franciscans, who had established a convent in his hometown.

Determined to serve God alone, Giles first lived as a hermit near a shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary, spending long hours in prayer accompanied by birds and wild animals. His holiness soon became widely known, and reports of miracles drew visitors from far and wide.

Seeking humility and obscurity, Giles entered the service of a local farmer, astonishing all by how his work never suffered despite his constant devotion to prayer. Eventually, he joined the Franciscan Order as a lay brother, where he was entrusted with the care of the garden. There, he built a small hut that became his hermitage.

Blessed Giles was famous for:
• Miraculous healings
• Ecstatic prayer (often levitating while praying)
• Prophetic insight
• Intense spiritual warfare, including bodily attacks from the devil
• A profound friendship with animals and all of God’s creation

He died in holiness on January 10, 1518, and his cult was officially confirmed by the Church in 1880.
