Each year Holy Mother Church gives us Lent because we forget.

We see the crucifix — but we do not see it.
We receive grace — but we waste it.
We make resolutions — but we abandon them.

Just as we grow blind to the New York skyline or the great monuments of the world, we grow spiritually numb to the Cross of Christ.

On Ash Wednesday, ashes are placed on our foreheads to remind us:

You are nothing without the grace of God.

This powerful traditional Catholic reflection challenges us to examine:

What have I done with the graces God gave me since last Lent?

What comforts have I cultivated that keep me from loving Christ fully?

What rationalizations and compromises have I made?

What obstacles are blocking grace in my soul?

St. Teresa reminds us:

“Anything that does not lead you to God is an obstacle. Throw it far from you.”

Lent is the time for change.
