On February 20, Holy Mother Church commemorates Hieromartyr Sadoc (Sadoth), Bishop of Persia, and the 128 Martyrs who suffered with him under King Sapor II.

St. Sadoc succeeded the great Hieromartyr Simeon of Persia. Before his arrest, he received a prophetic dream in which St. Simeon appeared in glory at the top of a ladder reaching to Heaven, saying:

"Ascend to me, Sadoc, and be not afraid. Yesterday I ascended — today you will ascend."

Soon after, Emperor Sapor II renewed his brutal persecution of Christians. St. Sadoc, along with his clergy and 128 faithful — including nine holy virgins — were arrested, imprisoned, and cruelly tortured for five months.

They were commanded to renounce Christ and worship the sun and fire.

Their response:

“We are Christians and worship the one God.”

For their steadfast confession of the Faith, they were sentenced to death by beheading, receiving the crown of martyrdom and ascending the ladder to eternal glory.

These Persian martyrs remind us that fidelity to Christ is worth more than life itself.

May their courage strengthen us in times of trial.
