Modern man — and even many modern Catholics — struggle to understand what St. Paul means by charity and what Our Lord means by faith.

In this powerful sermon, we confront one of the greatest confusions of our time: the replacement of supernatural charity with sentimental philanthropy — and the replacement of Almighty God with “almighty man.”

St. Paul warns us plainly:

“If I give all that I have to feed the poor, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.”

What does that mean?

Charity is not philanthropy.
Charity is not self-satisfaction.
Charity is not sentimentality.

True charity (caritas) is:

The love of God above all things

The love of neighbor for the sake of glorifying God

The supernatural virtue that perfects the soul

The radiance of the Blessed Trinity reflected in action

Modern man, however, has redefined:

Truth and falsehood

Good and evil

Even the nature of man and woman

As Whitaker Chambers warned:

“Almighty God has been replaced by almighty man.”

Without supernatural faith, we are blind.
Without charity ordered toward God, our works are empty.

Let our daily prayer be the prayer of the blind man:

“Lord, that I may see.”

This sermon is a direct challenge to the temptation every Catholic man faces daily — the temptation to become “modern.”

Be vigilant.
Resist.
Choose faith.
Choose true charity.
Choose God.
