On February 8, the Roman Martyrology commemorates Blessed Peter Igneus, Cardinal Bishop of Albano and monk of Vallombrosa, whose faith was confirmed by one of the most astonishing miracles in Church history — walking through fire without harm.

According to The Lives of the Saints and recorded by Abbot Ado in the Life of St. John Gualbert, Florence was thrown into turmoil by the simoniacal appointment of Peter of Pavia to the episcopal see. The people demanded that the Judgment of God be shown publicly.

At the command of the abbot of Vallombrosa, the monk Peter Aldobrandini volunteered to undergo the ancient ordeal by fire. After offering Holy Mass with great devotion before a crowd of nearly 3,000 people, two massive piles of blazing firewood were prepared.

Clad only in his alb, maniple, and stole, holding a crucifix, Peter prayed that God would preserve him unharmed — as He preserved the three young men in the furnace of Babylon. Then, fearless and serene, he walked directly through the flames.

Eyewitnesses testified that the fire parted before him, his feet sank into glowing ashes, and not a single hair or garment was burned. The people immediately recognized that God had spoken.

Soon afterward, Pope Alexander II removed the corrupt bishop from Florence. Blessed Peter was later appointed Cardinal Bishop of Albano by St. Gregory VII, sent as papal legate to France and Germany, and died holy in 1089.

This is the story of faith without compromise, divine justice, and a saint who feared God more than fire.
