The Holy Prophet Zechariah the Sickle-Seer, commemorated on February 8, is the 11th of the Twelve Minor Prophets and one of the clearest Old Testament witnesses to the coming of Christ.

Descended from the tribe of Levi and likely serving as a priest (Nehemiah 12), the Prophet Zechariah was called to prophetic service at a young age. According to the Church Fathers, he became a “spectator of super-worldly visions,” seeing future events as though they were present.

The Book of the Prophet Zechariah contains some of the most explicit Messianic prophecies in all of Scripture, including:

• Christ the High Priest and King (Zechariah 6:12)
• The Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9)
• The betrayal of Christ for 30 pieces of silver and the Potter’s Field (Zechariah 11:12–13)
• The piercing of Christ’s side on the Cross (Zechariah 12:10)
• The scattering of the Apostles at Gethsemane (Zechariah 13:7)
• The darkening of the sun at the Crucifixion (Zechariah 14:6–7)

The title “Sickle-Seer” comes from a terrifying vision in which Zechariah saw a flying sickle sent by God to judge thieves and perjurers (Zechariah 5:1–3), symbolizing divine justice.

According to sacred tradition, the holy Prophet lived to old age and was buried near Jerusalem, beside his contemporary the Prophet Haggai (December 16). His tomb was rediscovered in 415 AD, and his holy relics were later transferred to the Church of Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, in Constantinople (October 23).
