This powerful homily for the Sunday of the Prodigal Son weaves together Psalm 137 (“By the Rivers of Babylon”), the lived experience of exile, and the teaching of St. Gregory the Theologian on repentance.

Drawing from personal experience in seminary and the Byzantine liturgical tradition, this reflection shows how remembering God and weeping for our sins are not signs of weakness, but the beginning of true return to the Father’s house.

Like the people of Israel in Babylon, and like the prodigal son among the pigs, we often place ourselves into self-exile through sin. Yet the Church reminds us: the Father’s house is always open. When we remember the goodness of Zion — the New Jerusalem — repentance becomes possible, and grace does the rest.

This homily is a call to:

Remember God

Weep for our sins

Reject the false “goodness” of Babylon

Return again and again to the Father’s mercy
