Venerable Luke of Hellas, commemorated on February 7, is one of the great ascetic saints of the Orthodox Church — a humble shepherd who became a wonderworker, prophet, and healer through obedience, prayer, and radical charity.

Born to poor farmers in the Greek village of Castoria, Saint Luke labored in the fields from childhood, giving away his food and clothing to the poor. Even as a child, he astonished his family with signs of sanctity — praying in mid-air, multiplying harvests through charity, and practicing extreme temperance.

After the death of his father, Luke entered monastic life, eventually embracing a life of solitude, fasting, and unceasing prayer across Greece — from Mount Iannou to Corinth, Steris, and finally a desolate island refuge. God rewarded his hidden life with the gift of foresight and miracles, and many were healed through his prayers.

Before his repose in 946 AD, the saint prepared for death in silence and humility. After his burial, myrrh flowed from his relics, and countless healings occurred — confirming God’s glory revealed through a life of obedience.
