Blessed Eugénie Smet, also known as Mother Mary of Providence, was a woman consumed by absolute trust in Divine Providence and a burning love for the souls in Purgatory. Born in Lille, France, in 1825, she would go on to found the Congregation of the Helpers of the Holy Souls, dedicating her life to prayer, sacrifice, and missionary charity for the suffering souls awaiting Heaven.

Educated at the Sacred Heart Convent, Eugénie matured a deep spiritual life marked by confidence in God, tireless charity to the poor, and devotion to the forgotten dead. Despite opposition, illness, poverty, and intense trials—including conflicts with clergy, financial ruin, and grave physical suffering—she persevered with heroic faith.

Under the guidance of Jesuit spiritual directors, her restless zeal was purified into obedience and holiness. Her work flourished, spreading from France to China and beyond, receiving papal approval in 1868. Even while dying of cancer, she continued to govern her congregation and trust unwaveringly in Providence.

Blessed Eugénie Smet died in 1871, leaving behind a living legacy of prayer for the Holy Souls. She was beatified by Pope Pius XII in 1957 and is commemorated on February 7.
