St. Albinus of Angers (March 1st), as recorded by Fr. Alban Butler in The Lives of the Saints, was born into nobility in Brittany — yet from childhood, he longed for something greater than earthly honor.

Rejecting the comforts of his birth, he embraced the monastic life at a young age, becoming a perfect model of prayer, mortification, obedience, and detachment from the world. At just 35 years old, he was chosen Abbot. Twenty-five years later, he became Bishop of Angers — where his humility only deepened.

Though honored by kings and renowned for miracles, St. Albinus considered himself the most unworthy servant of God. His true greatness shone not in power, but in humility and fearless defense of the Church’s laws.

At the Third Council of Orléans (538), he courageously upheld the sanctity of marriage by enforcing excommunication for incestuous unions within forbidden degrees — proving that true charity requires defending moral truth.

He died on March 1, 549. His relics were later enshrined by St. Germanus of Paris, and many churches and monasteries throughout France bear his name.

St. Albinus teaches us:

• Detachment from worldly honor
• Perseverance in prayer and mortification
• Humility in positions of authority
• Courage in defending the moral law

In an age where compromise is praised, St. Albinus reminds us that holiness requires both humility and firmness.
