Glory to Jesus Christ! In tonight’s study of The Evergetinos (Vol. 2) we continue Hypothesis 32: Contrition and the Gift of Tears, picking up on page 253 and reading sayings #12–18.

A central theme emerges: contrition is love—a longing for the Beloved, a sorrow that is never isolated from relationship. The Desert Fathers teach that true sorrow does not end in despair, but becomes the path to healing, repentance, and joy.

We reflect on Abraham purchasing a tomb as “a place of mourning and contrition,” the way God’s providence calls us inward to repentance, and how providence may be revealed not only through blessings but also through affliction. We also discuss the danger of reducing the faith to something merely intellectual or notional, and why the Fathers (and St. Isaac) urge us to learn God’s love experientially—especially through the mystery of the Cross.

A particularly striking passage comes from Abba Theodore, who says: tears are like rain, and the heart like a garden—sometimes one day of rain sustains the fruits for a long season. When compunction comes, the Fathers counsel us to guard the gift through humility, prayer, reading, and avoiding distractions that scatter the heart.
