For 125 years, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne have provided free, compassionate care to terminal cancer patients. Now, the sisters are taking legal action against a New York state law, saying it violates their right to freely exercise their religion, as well as Catholic teachings on gender identity. David Uebbing, director of communications at the Catholic Benefit Association, explains what aspects of the state law the sisters take issue with and whether there is legal precedent that could work in their favor. Lastly, he discusses what it would mean for religious orders in New York and across the United States if the sisters win in court.
