Byzantine Saints: Saint John, Bishop of the Goths in the Crimea (19 May)

St. John, Bishop of the Goths, is commemorated on May 19th in the Orthodox Church. Born in the 8th century through the fervent prayers of his parents, St. John embraced a life of asceticism from his youth. He journeyed to Jerusalem, spending three years visiting the holy places before returning to his homeland.
During the reign of the iconoclast emperor Constantine Copronymus, the Gothic bishop was exiled, and the faithful Goths begged St. John to become their shepherd. To avoid the spread of iconoclasm, St. John traveled to Georgia where he was ordained bishop. Upon returning, persecution from the Khazars forced him into hiding for several years.
Shortly before his repose, St. John prophetically declared that he would stand before Christ forty days after the death of the Khazar ruler. Exactly as foretold, the holy bishop departed to the Lord in the year 790.
His relics were laid to rest in the Parthenonite Monastery in Crimea near Mount Ayudag, in the church he built in honor of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
