If manuscripts, Church Fathers, apostolic authorship, and the inward witness of the Spirit cannot settle the canon of Scripture, what can? This second part argues from the nature of inspiration that the only criterion both sufficient and universal is divine revelation handed down in Sacred Tradition and made known to all the faithful by the Magisterium, and it answers the claim that Protestants stand where the Jews stood with the Old Testament, along with three other objections. Then we examine the Protestant alternatives in detail: Calvin’s self-authenticating Scripture and the Westminster Confession, the consensus of Christians, the historical testimony of the early Church, and the argument from 2 Timothy 3:16.
