In December 1624 the public executioner in Rome burned a corpse, a portrait, and a sack of books together on a single pyre in the Campo de' Fiori. The body belonged to Marco Antonio de Dominis, Archbishop of Split and Primate of Dalmatia, the highest ranking Catholic prelate ever to defect to the Church of England, who wrote one of the century's largest attacks on the papacy, was seated behind only Canterbury and York, and then returned to Rome and swore before God that he had been lying the entire time. This is the story of a man both communions agreed was the worst of his era, whose books the Caroline divines went on quietly mining for decades after Rome had burned them.
