On August 29, the Church commemorates St. Arkadios the Wonderworker, Bishop of Arsinoe in Cyprus. Born in the village of Arsos to wealthy and devout Christian parents named Michael and Anna, Arkadios lived from the late third century into the early fourth century.

As a young man, St. Arkadios traveled to Constantinople to receive his education. After completing his studies, he returned to his homeland in Cyprus. There he became renowned not for worldly learning or family wealth, but for his rigorous ascetic struggles, holiness of life, and extraordinary Christian virtues.

Following the repose of St. Nikon, Arkadios was chosen to succeed him upon the episcopal throne of Arsinoe. As bishop, he faithfully shepherded the flock entrusted to his care and served the Church in a manner pleasing to God. His virtuous life and the wonders associated with his intercession earned him the title of Wonderworker.

After completing his earthly ministry, St. Arkadios reposed peacefully in the Lord on August 29. His family also gave another saint to the Church: his brother, St. Theosebios the God-Bearer of Arsinoe, commemorated on October 12.

The life of St. Arkadios reminds us that education, wealth, and position find their true purpose only when placed at the service of Jesus Christ. Through ascetic discipline, humility, and faithful pastoral care, he became a holy shepherd and enduring light for the Christians of Cyprus.
