Are we willing to stand for the truth as St. John the Baptist did? Are we prepared to suffer for Jesus Christ?
On the feast of the Beheading of the Holy and Glorious Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John, this Byzantine Catholic homily reflects upon the humility, courage, and unwavering fidelity of the man chosen by God to prepare the way for Christ.
From his birth until his final breath, St. John dedicated himself completely to God’s will. He proclaimed the coming of the Messiah, called sinners to repentance, and became a beacon of light in a world darkened by sin and corruption.
St. John was imprisoned and beheaded by King Herod—not for committing a crime, but for daring to proclaim the truth and condemn an unlawful marriage. His martyrdom reveals the price of defending righteousness in a world that frequently rejects, distorts, or silences the truth.
Although Herod silenced his earthly voice, he could not destroy St. John’s witness. His courage has inspired generations of Christians to pursue holiness, integrity, and fidelity to Christ. His death was not a defeat, but a testimony to the ultimate victory of God’s truth over the powers of darkness.
Through the prayers of St. John the Baptist, may we receive the strength to live lives worthy of our calling as apostles and disciples of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ.
Holy Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John, pray for us!
