Truth always triumphs. Lies and injustice may appear victorious for a time, but their victory is temporary. The martyrdom of St. John the Baptist teaches us to look beyond the present moment and see every trial in the light of eternity.
St. John died as an innocent man because sin wanted to silence the truth. Yet death could not silence his witness. His martyrdom became a crown of victory and the beginning of a greater life with God.
In this Byzantine Catholic homily for the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, we consider how Christians should respond when falsely accused, mistreated, or persecuted. If suffering comes as a consequence of our own sins, we should accept it humbly as an opportunity for repentance. But when we are innocent, Christ calls us to forgive, love our enemies, do good to those who hate us, and entrust justice to God.
Sin fears truth because truth exposes it. When confronted by the witness of a faithful Christian, a person may either repent or harden his heart and persecute the messenger. Our response must never become anger, hatred, or revenge. Instead, injustice can become an opportunity to grow in holiness and offer another testimony to the truth.
Through the intercession of St. John the Baptist, may God give us the courage to defend what is true while loving those who oppose us.
St. John the Baptist, pray for us!
