St. Honoratus, Archbishop of Arles (16 January): Butler's Lives of the Saints

From The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, this episode recounts the holy life of St. Honoratus, Archbishop of Arles, monk, and founder of the famous Monastery of Lérins.
Born into a noble Roman family, Honoratus renounced paganism and worldly ambition, inspiring his brother Venantius to embrace Christ. Together they sought a life of total renunciation, guided by the holy hermit St. Caprasius. After hardship, illness, and loss, Honoratus settled on a small island near the coast of Gaul—today known as St. Honorat Island—where he founded one of the most influential monasteries of early Christianity.
Under his leadership, the Monastery of Lérins became a cradle of saints, bishops, and theologians, marked by charity, humility, concord, and devotion. Though reluctant, Honoratus was later compelled to become Archbishop of Arles, where he labored tirelessly for the Church until his holy death in 429.
This reading preserves the classical Catholic tradition and spirituality handed down through the Church, offering inspiration for prayer, sacrifice, and holiness.
