St Rostislav-Michael, the Right-Believing Great Prince of Kiev, was one of the most influential Christian rulers of 12th-century Rus. Commemorated on March 14, this holy prince devoted his life to strengthening both the state and the Church.

The son of St Mstislav the Great and grandson of Vladimir Monomakh, Prince Rostislav ruled the Smolensk principality for over 40 years, transforming it into a powerful center of faith and culture. He founded cities, built churches and monasteries, and helped establish the Smolensk diocese, strengthening the spiritual life of the region.

Known for his wisdom, justice, humility, and obedience to the Church, St Rostislav played a decisive role in the complicated political and ecclesiastical struggles of his time. Though deeply involved in the governance of Rus and the disputes over Kiev, he remained a peacemaker and defender of the Church's unity.

The holy prince had a deep spiritual life and maintained close relationships with the monks of the Kiev Caves Monastery, even expressing the desire to end his life as a monk. Though he died before fulfilling this wish in 1167, his life stands as a powerful example of Christian leadership, humility, and devotion to the Church.
