In the basement of Block 11 at Auschwitz, a prisoner kept hearing hymns coming from a starvation cell. The priest leading them was Maximilian Kolbe.
We look at three threads in his own letters and in what witnesses saw, his last preserved letter to his mother, his writings on trusting God’s will and resting in Mary’s hands, and the roll call where he took Franciszek Gajowniczek’s place.

Kolbe never published a list called “three rules.” The title groups three themes from his documented writings and life. His exact words at the roll call were not recorded in one version, so accounts differ slightly.
