The story of the 40 Holy Martyrs of Sebaste is one of the most powerful examples of Christian courage in the early Church.

In the year 313 AD, while Emperor Constantine the Great legalized Christianity, his pagan co-ruler Licinius began persecuting Christians in his part of the Roman Empire.

In the Armenian city of Sebaste, forty Roman soldiers of the famed Twelfth Legion refused to renounce Christ and sacrifice to pagan gods.

For their faith, they were sentenced to a brutal death.

Stripped of their clothing and forced to stand on a frozen lake in the middle of winter, the soldiers endured unimaginable suffering for the sake of Christ.

One soldier fled the lake, losing his crown of martyrdom.
But in a miraculous moment, a Roman guard named Aglaius witnessed heavenly crowns above the martyrs and immediately declared:

"I too am a Christian."

He joined them in the freezing water, restoring their number to forty.

The martyrs persevered until the end, receiving the imperishable crowns promised by Christ.

Their witness became one of the most famous martyrdoms in Christian history and is commemorated on March 9 in the Church.

These heroic saints remind us that nothing is more precious than Christ.
