The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord—also known in the East as The Meeting—is a feast filled with quiet joy, holy expectation, and radiant light. Forty days after His birth, Jesus Christ is carried into the temple, where longing meets fulfillment and the Old Covenant embraces the New.

In this homily, we reflect deeply on the sacred encounter between Christ, Simeon, and Anna. These two elders were not passive observers, but faithful servants whose lives were shaped by prayer, fasting, patience, and hope. Through them, the Church teaches us how to wait faithfully and how to recognize Christ when He comes humbly and quietly.

Simeon’s prayer—“Now you may dismiss your servant, O Lord, in peace”—is not a prayer of weariness, but of fulfillment. It is so central to Christian life that the Church prays it daily at Vespers, reminding us that every day is a miniature lifetime offered back to God.

Anna, the prophetess and widow, shows us another kind of holiness: perseverance in worship. Her lifelong fidelity becomes a proclamation of redemption, proving that holiness is often hidden and fruit is often borne late.

This feast is also known as Candlemas, a celebration of Christ as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles.” But this light is not merely admired—it is meant to be received, carried, and proclaimed.

May this reflection help you learn how to wait like Simeon, persevere like Anna, and recognize Christ in the present moment—so that we too may one day surrender our lives into God’s hands in peace and trust.
