On the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord, we are reminded that Christ is the Light of the world — and that we are called to carry that Light with us.

In this homily, we reflect on the blessing of candles, childhood memories of candle blessings in Orthodox schools, and a powerful reminder from baptism:

“Receive this lighted candle, and strive throughout your life to shine with the light of faith and good works.”

These candles are not meant to be stored away in a cupboard or forgotten. They are alive — just like our faith must be alive. When we light them before our icons, in our homes, or in moments of prayer, they point us back to our baptism and forward into our mission: to let the Light of Christ shine in the world.

Drawing from the Gospel encounter of Christ being received by Simeon, this homily reminds us that Christ is not only the light of Israel, but the Light of Revelation to the Gentiles — a Light for all people.

As we leave the church and go into our homes, workplaces, and daily encounters, we are called to live that childhood truth with adult conviction:

👉 This little light of mine — I’m going to let it shine.
